Anatomical model of pregnant woman
The history of anatomical models of pregnant women is far from certain. While it seems some were genuine teaching models - such as the elaborate French wax castings - the simplified-but-elegant ivory carvings that were largely made in Germany seem to have been more display pieces than anything functional.
Many physicians and surgeons throughout Europe collected ivory “surgical instruments” - not to be used in actual procedures, as they had long been surpassed by brass and refined copper tools - but as elements of a wunderkammer - otherwise known as a cabinet of curiosities.
